Help in the Name -

Ezreinu b'shem Adonai oseh shamayim va'aretz...

Psalm 124:8

Our help is in the Name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 124:8

A common Hebrew expression used to express the help of God is "b'ezrat hashem," meaning "with the help of God." This phrase is often said as a sort of preface before announcing any plan or future resolution:

bā€™ezrat hashem

In English, b'ezrat hashem is often expressed as:

B"H

In Hebrew, this is often expressed:

Man proposes; God disposes

Another expression is "im yirtzeh hashem," meaning "if it pleases God." This phrase is often said to recall that God's influence and directions are crucial to the outcome of one's plans:

im yirtzeh hashem

In English, im yirtzeh hashem is often abbreviated:

IY"H

Regardless of how we say it, however, it is important to remember that our help comes from the God of Israel, the Maker of heaven and the earth, and that nothing is beyond His sovereign control and power. As it is also written, "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps" (Proverbs 16:9).
