	Becoming basar echad ...


	Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave (Deut. 10:20 KJV).


	These are uncertain times, even perilous days (2 Tim. 3:1). Yet despite the danger of the world churning around us, this verse from the Word of God reminds us that we are to fear Adonai, to serve Him, and to cleave unto Him.


	Note that the Hebrew verb rendered as "cleave" in the KJV is dabaq, the same word used to describe how a man cleaves to his wife so that the two become basar echad – one flesh (see Gen. 2:24). Dabaq is also related to the word for bodily joint (debeq), implying that we are to stick as closely to the LORD as our bones might stick to our skin (Job 19:20).

The Lord Jesus asked the Father that we might be one (echad) with Him, cleaving to Him as His body (basar) and profoundly united to Him in love (see John 17:21-23; 1 Cor. 12:12; Eph. 5:23).

Yes, despite the difficulty of living during these last days, we are comforted by the gracious love of the Lord our God and the promise of ultimate union with Him.

May the Lord God help us all to fear Him, serve Him, and cleave to Him in the truth. Amen.
