Words of the Parashah - Yitro

Hebrew Word of the Week

Based on the Weekly Torah Portion

The Hebrew word of the week is the word Yitro ("Jethro"), a proper noun that names Moses' father-in-law, as well as the fifth weekly Torah portion from the book of Exodus, namely, parashat Yitro (יִתְרוֹ), designated in his honor.  The name "Yitro" is thought to mean "his abundance," from the noun yeter ("wealth") combined with the third person singular suffix (-וֹ). Yitro was a remarkable person who greatly influenced Moses and was directly responsible for establishing the "religion" of Judaism, particularly the legal hierarchy of judges in ancient Israel and the formation of the great Assembly of Elders (Sanhedrin).
